To build the do it yourself hanging torture cage you will need:
- 1 Piece of 1/2" thick plywood 2'x2'
- 4 Pieces of rebar 8' long
- 1 Hollow metal pipe for bending the rebar
- Drill press with small drill bit for drilling through metal and larger bit for wood
- 1 Can of spray paint (black, gray, or black)
- 8 Cotter pins
- 2 Chains (or rope)
The Scene:
I used this prop in my torture chamber together with the guillotine, stocks, gallows, and electric chair. It can also be used as part of a witch's hut or other scene of your choice. The torture cage can have a person in it, or you can put a skeleton or something like that inside. One year, my 6-year-old brother sat in the corner of the cage with a sheet draped over him and a mask on his head. Everyone thought he was a dummy, and when some brave soul reached out to touch him, my brother jumped out scaring the poor kids out of their wits. As part of the torture chamber, the person inside screams, "Get me out of here; he's going to kill me! Hurry, before he (the executioner) gets you too." The good thing about this prop is that it disassembles for easy storage.
Directions:
Mark all 4 pieces of rebar a little over 3 feet from both ends with a marker or tape. Slide the metal pipe around the rebar and use that to bend the rebar to a 90-degree angle. If you don't have a metal pipe, be creative and find something else. Once you have bent the rebar, drill a hole through the rebar about an inch from each end. The hole needs to be big enough for the cotter pin to go through.
Cotter pin
Drill holes in your base for the rebar to go through. They should be about 10" from center. Then paint the base your desired color.
Put the rebar through the holes, and put the cotter pins through the rebar. Wrap a chain around all the rebar at the top. Hang the cage from a crane (if you're lucky) or from a tree or ceiling.
The finished product looks like this.
